US, Britain and France Warned Iran For New Sanctions

The US, Britain and France warned Iran on Thursday that it may face new sanctions over its nuclear program, but Russia and China hinted that they were not convinced.
The Western powers have shown their desire to ratchet up the pressure on an increasingly defiant Teheran over its atomic ambitions during a UN Security Council debate on Iran. However Russia and China hinted that they were not convinced.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Sworn in For a Second Term

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was sworn in for a second term on August 5, 2009. The 52-year-old took the oath of office for another four years at a ceremony in parliament after his landslide election victory in June that triggered the worst turmoil in the country’s history.

Protests over Iranian elections continue

Thousands of supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi, Iran’s defeated presidential candidate, demonstrated for a sixth straight day to keep up the pressure on the Iranian regime over the disputed election 2009.
The Guardians Council, the electoral watchdog, said it has received a total of 646 complaints of irregularities in the conduct of the poll from Mr Mousavi and the other two defeated candidates and was investigating these complaints. Iran frees US journalist Roxana Saberi

Roxana Saberi, a 32-year-old dual Iranian-American citizen, met her parents outside Evin prison Monday evening after the court cut her eight-year prison sentence on charges of spying for the U.S to a two-year suspended sentence.  ”She was reunited with her father and mother. They left for their house,” her lawyer Saleh Nikbakht told The Associated Press. He said Saberi was free to leave Iran immediately.
