UN security council has issued a ‘strong’ statement on the killing of over 300 people in Gaza strip by Israel’s assualt which Israel calls its right of self defence. In the statement, security council has called for end to violence by both parties. There is no mention of Israel or Hamas. There is no concern about the disproportionate use of force by Israel killing and wounding hundreds of people.

The UN secretary general voiced his concern in a statement issued by his spokeswoman Michele Montas:

“He deplores that violence is continuing today, and he strongly urges once again an immediate stop to all acts of violence.”

You can feel the stength in the statement and can see how strongly he has responded to Israel’s attack on Gaza. I am sure this statement must have send a strong signal to Israel and Hamas to stop attacking each other and Israel might have stopped the attacks by now after all the chief of UN has issued that strong statement.

It is no surprise to me at all that not even a single world leader has voiced a word against such barbarian act by Israel, however, these leaders are very quick to raise their voice when ever Hamas fires rockets into Israel. After all only free nations have the right of self defence as Israel but slaves have no such right. Israel’s attack is always right of self defence and Hamas rocket fires are always aggression.

I do put some ressponsibilty on Hamas for these killings as Hamas should stop useless rocket fires which are aimed at harming Palestinians and not Israelis. However, no one can justify the use of force by Israel killing hundreds of people .

A fragile truce between Israel and Hamas came into force in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, amid scepticism over how long the Egyptian-brokered deal would hold. It is the first formal ceasefire since Hamas’s takeover of the territory just over a year ago, which triggered a crippling Israel blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The deal calls for a halt to Hamas rocket fire on Israel and Israeli strikes on Gaza. It also requires Israel to progressively ease its blockade of the territory where most of the 1.5 million people depend on foreign aid.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, whose government boycotts Hamas as a terrorist outfit, warned on Wednesday that the ceasefire would be “fragile” and could be “short-lived.”

World leaders welcomed the truce news, but Israelis and Palestinians were wary. A senior Hamas official said that border crossings used to import goods into Gaza would be partially opened several hours after calm settles in, while talks to open the Rafah border with Egypt could follow a week later.

The peace in Middle East is beneficial for both Arabs and Israelies. How long more it will take for both parties to understand the basic fact that unless they both respect each other’s right to live in peace, people will keep on dieing on both sides. Both parties have the great responssiblity on their shoulders to make this truce effective for at least six month and then extend it later.

All the best to both the people of Israel and Palestine.
