Pakistan wins ICC T20 Cricket World Cup

Pakistan has defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the final of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup 2009. Sri Lanka scored 138 for 6 in their alloted 20 overs. Pakistan made these runs in 19th over.

Shahid Afridi scored half century once again and also took one wicket. He has definitely played a winning innings in the final as well. Pakistan defeated South Africa in Semi Final.

Pakistan can win World T20 cricket cup

Pakistan cricket team captain Younus Khan has confidently predicted victory for his resurgent team after they defeated favourites South Africa by seven runs in a nail-biting semi-final. All-rounder Shahid Afridi played a crucial role in the Pakistan’s victory by scoring 56 runs and taking 2-16 with his leg-spinners.

Jubliant Younus Khan said:

One more game and this World Cup is ours. In the big games we do well and now I think we will win this. We can take our chances and we can win the World Cup.

We are slow starters, we arrived late, didn’t have a lot of practice sessions so there was no pressure on us. Suddenly we are in a good position. Afridi is always a match-winner for us. Today he was batting three and he turned it on for Pakistan, it’s all about his commitment but also about our teamwork.

The maverick batsman Shahid said:

It was our last chance to make the final. If you are batting and bowling obviously it’s good. I am very happy to see my team in the final, that’s what I wanted and what I said to him (Younus) – to send me in either at number three or as an opener and he did. I really enjoyed my batting but also the bowling and fielding.

Pakistan successfully defended 149-4 to restrict the favoured Proteas to 142-5 before a jam packed Trent Bridge stadium. Pakistan, runners-up to India in the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa two years ago, await the winners of Friday’s semi-final between Sri Lanka and the West Indies in Sunday’s final at Lord’s.

‘Pakistan pushed to brink of isolation’

Ehsan Mani, the former ICC president, has said “What I fear is that Pakistan is being pushed to the brink of isolation”. “It’s time that the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) comes out with an effective strategy. It will have to consolidate relations with other Test-playing nations”.

“India refused to tour Pakistan and now the ICC is raising security issues about Sri Lanka’s visit,” he said. “Next would be Australia’s tour (in March), then the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy (to be hosted by the country) leading up to the World Cup in 2011.”

It is worth mentioning here that cricket team of England has no problems of security while playing in India but the same country refuses to play in Pakistan. The recent attacks in Mumbai have exposed the so called fool proof security of India. Same is the case with Austrailia which did not paly in Pakistan but was happy to play in India. ICC is looking into security of Sri Lankan players in Pakistan, however, the same was not done for England team in India although the fool proof security was fully exposed.

I think it is not just matter of security it is more than that. ICC should take some effective measures against the cricket playing countries who choose not to play in Pakistan. If ICC moves ICC champions trophy to some other country on bases of security, Pakistan should demand ICC to pay PCB all the financial losses which PCB will suffer and also in protest should not take part in the event.
