All 152 people on board were killed after the Airblue jet crashed into the hills north of Islamabad on July 28, 2010. The plane was scheduled to land shortly before 10 AM Pakistan standard time after a two-hour flight from Karachi, Pakistan. But it encountered heavy monsoon rains and thick fog as it approached, then lost contact with the control tower and crashed.

The aircraft, an Airbus A321, crashed some 15 kilometers from the airport, scorching a wide stretch of the Margalla Hills, including a section behind Faisal Mosque, one of Islamabad’s most prominent landmarks. Twisted metal wreckage hung from trees and lay scattered across the ground. The aircraft had no technical faults, Airblue spokesman Raheel Ahmed told reporters in Karachi yesterday. “The weather was bad but not below parameters. The pilot had 35 years and 25,000 flying hours of experience”, he said. The exact cause of the crash was not immediately clear, and rescue workers were seeking the “black box” flight data recorder amid the wreckage which has not been found yet

Pakistan declared a day of national mourning and called off a cabinet meeting after the tragic passenger jet crash. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the cabinet “expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic incident” and offered prayers for passengers who were killed, according to the statement released by Prime Minister Gilani’s office.
