9 Is Not 11
(And November Isn’t September)
By Arundhati Roy
We’ve forfeited the rights to our own tragedies. As the carnage in Mumbai raged on, day after horrible day, our 24-hour news channels informed us that we were watching “India’s 9/11.” And like actors in a Bollywood rip-off of an old Hollywood film, we’re expected to play our parts and say our lines, even though we know it’s all been said and done before.
As tension in the region builds, U.S. Senator John McCain has warned Pakistan that, if it didn’t act fast …
In response to Hamas rocket fires in to Israeli state, Israeli airplanes pounded Gaza strip killing at least 269 people and wounding over 700. Israelis were lucky not to get hurt by Hamas rockets which are fired on daily basis into israeli torritory.
Bush administration has rightly put the onus on Hamas for all the deaths and destruction as Secretary of Defence Condoleezza Rice said,
“The United States … holds Hamas responsible for breaking the ceasefire and for the renewal of violence in Gaza”
Whereas Israel has also urged the internation community to …
On this day (December 25), each year, the man who founded Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, is paid tribute to – in special television programmes, newspaper supplements, in articles and in editorials such as this one. But it is unfortunate that it is, essentially, on just one day of the year that thoughts turn to the Quaid-e-Azam. Though, no doubt, as a sensitive, honest and moderate man, Jinnah would have been appalled to see the state of the country he created, there is much that can be done to better its …
Ehsan Mani, the former ICC president, has said “What I fear is that Pakistan is being pushed to the brink of isolation”. “It’s time that the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) comes out with an effective strategy. It will have to consolidate relations with other Test-playing nations”.
“India refused to tour Pakistan and now the ICC is raising security issues about Sri Lanka’s visit,” he said. “Next would be Australia’s tour (in March), then the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy (to be hosted by the country) leading up to the World Cup in …

Eight people in two vehicles were killed by the missiles and another was wounded, the official said. Near one of the vehicles an unexploded missile was also found …
Pakistan being used to provoke, to aid and abet terrorism. Nobody wants war.” Indian prime minister Manmohan Sigh told news reporters outside Indian Parliment.
India accused the banned Pakistan-based group Lashkar-i-Taiba for attacks in Mumbai and demanded that Islamabad snuff out groups that fuel terror in India. Lashkar-e-Taiba has denied any involvement from day one. Furthermore, Pakistan, while denying any government role in the attack, has offered to help in a joint probe and has detained some suspects. But India has rejected the steps as merely cosmetic and demanded more effective …
Pranab Mukherjee, the Indian foreign minister while reopening Taj hotel in Mumbai said “Terrorism remains a scourge for our region. If a country [Pakistan] cannot keep the assurances that it has given, then it obliges us to consider the entire range of options that exist to protect our interests and people from this menace,”.
Mr Mukherjee and the defence minister A K Antony met India’s three service chiefs and senior security officials on Saturday to consider all possible scenarios against their nuclear rival and neighbour, which they believe has given shelter …
