The documentary New Muslim Cool, directed by Jennifer Maytorena Taylor, is about Hamza Perez whose life changed from that of a drug dealer to that of a rapper and a spiritual leader.

The film “New Muslim Cool” portrays over a year in Hamza’s life including some turbulent and emotional moments like the one in which the FBI raided the recently-established mosque where he prays during Friday prayers. Over the same period of time, he worked on recordings with his brother, studied and got married and had a child.

Hamza never loses his head or becomes extremist through all the troubled moments. It is a good lesson for those people who use the troubled moments in their or other Muslims as an excuse to rage violence. One should listen to Hamza when he says “Any time a reading of the Qu’ran takes you into violence and away from love, you’re reading it wrong.” It is very true. I hope that Muslims through out the world understand the Qu’ran the same way as Hamza has understood.
