NATO supply route closed in Pakistan

30 December 2008 No Comment

Pakistan has launched offensive against millitants in Khyber pass which is alos used to ferry supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan. In recent months, the road through the Khyber Pass in northwest Pakistan has come under increased attacks by militants trying to squeeze western forces fighting a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan.

About 75 per cent of the fuel, food and other logistical goods for Western soldiers in landlocked Afghanistan are delivered through the winding, mountainous route in Pakistan via the port of Karachi.

The road has been temporarily closed to traffic at least twice this year for security reasons, each time for no longer than several days.

A civilian administrator in Khyber said, “Because of these operations, supplies have been suspended to Afghanistan and vice versa.” However, he gave no details on the offensive or how long the suspension was expected to last.

Gunmen have staged a series of raids on truck depots near the Pakistani city of Peshawar in recent weeks, killing several guards and burning hundreds of vehicles, including dozens of U.S.-bought Humvees destined for the Afghan army.

I hope that this operation will help to uproute the millitants activities which are not only repeatedly attacking supply trucks as well Pakistan armed forces in the area. Although war and military action is not a solution to any problem and only increasing fueling for the problem, I am hoping that the present operation will succeed in dealing with millitancy in the area. People of Pakistan want peace not terrorists.
