Buried Alive

2 September 2008 No Comment

Buried AliveA provincial assembly has passed resolution condemning the buring alive of five women in Baluchistan, Pakistan in the name of honour.  Taking participation in the debate the MPA Shazia Marri said: “The perpetrators of this brutal act are still scot-free and action has not been taken to arrest them. Such condemnable incidents occur due to certain mindsets. Strict measures should be taken to stop such heinous crimes.”  Another MPA Humera Alwani said it was despicable to state in the Senate that burying women alive was a Baloch tradition. Islam and other religions allowed a woman to marry as per her own will, she said.

The prime minister of Pakistan Mr. Gillani said in an interview with media that it was utterly disappointing that five women had been buried alive in the name of honour in Balochistan.

Police in Pakistan have exhumed the bodies of two women allegedly buried alive in western Balochistan province. They have also arrested six people, including some relatives of the women. Reports from the area say the women were killed in July because they wanted to marry men of their own choice, against the wishes of tribal elders. Three other women were also reported killed but police have not found their bodies. Human rights groups have expressed outrage at the killings.

The spine-chilling details of the cold-blooded murder of five women in the province of Balochistan, who were actually buried alive makes one shiver in horour. The ‘sin’ committed by three of them  was that they wanted to marry the men of their choice. The two women, the girls’ elders, paid the price for protesting against the murders.

The authorities as well as the civil society will have to take steps to end these inhuman practices which are also condemned by our relegion Islam. Wasn’t our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)  told Arabs to stop burying their female children. Aren’t we not still living in the same dark ages when women were treated like a commodity?

I beleive we all need to condemn these brutal killings and make all the efforts in our hands so that authorities prosecute and punish the culprits to maximum.
